Post and Core Overview

Endodontically treated teeth might require reinforcement over time, and at Southern Cross Dental, we offer metal post and core reinforcement in a range of alloys.

Why choose metal post and core?

With loss of the coronal tooth structure, metal posts can retain the core build-up, with the aim to restore as much coronal and radicular tooth structure as possible.

Considerations for metal post and core

With metal or ceramic post and core restoration, the retaining dentinal structure will indicate whether metal post is necessary.

Considerations include preserving as much coronal and radicular tooth structure as possible and using a ferrule of minimum 2mm vertical and 1mm dentin thickness when inserting a post.

If all-ceramic crown is chosen for an anterior restoration, the colour and opacity of the post may lead to discolouration and shadowing of the crown, especially for an IPS e.max® restoration. Therefore an opaquer is critical to avoid and protect against discolouration, if metal is used for strength.
